Letters from the President – January 2012

HAPPY NEW YEAR!   I just love a new year … it reminds me of new beginnings and another year of learning and growing for our students!  Have you made New Year’s resolutions in your family?   If not, try it … just make one and hold your family accountable.  For super busy families, it could be everyone sits at the table for a meal at least ONE night a week!  How about at least one outdoor  family activity a week?  The weather has been so mild, we have no excuse! Start small and it’s easy to add on … don’t bite off too big a resolution or you’ll start off big and have a hard time getting back on track.  Baby steps … just like education. From kindergarten to high school seniors we grow and learn at a realistic pace.

Give it a try and one day you will graduate to a new resolution!

Warm regards

Robin

Garnet Gold & Green Committee / Garden Club

Garnet Gold and Green Committee

The PTSA Garnet Gold and Green Committee obtained six additional white recycling barrels from FSU’s Campbell Stadium and placed them in needed areas in the athletic fields areas.  Students and other patrons are encouraged to use these for cans and bottles only, not for trash.

The PTSA has also received approval from the administration to plant 16 more shade trees around campus, with 10 new trees and 6 to replace previously planted trees that did not survive last year’s severe drought.  This will bring the total number of trees planted on campus by the PTSA over the last 6 years to about 80.

Planting will take place during the next six weeks.  The Junior High Citizens of Planet Earth (COPE) group, sponsored by Janet Cotterall, has agreed to assist with the planting.  Any other groups or individuals interested in helping with this project should contact Danni Vogt, Garnet, Gold and Green Committee Chair, at dannivogt@comcast.net.  A free upper body workout will be included.

Garden

The PTSA Elementary School garden project is showing signs of life, with greens and peas and other vegetables doing nicely.  Thanks to Mr. Tony from the Extended Day program for his time and expertise.

Garnet Gold and Green Committee

The PTSA Garnet Gold and Green Committee’s mission is to maximize campus recycling and provide shade trees and general campus beautification.

This year the PTSA will again work with staff and faculty to maximize campus recycling. Student recycling teams are in place this year to collect and recycle paper, plastic bottles and aluminum cans from classrooms and offices at the school. Each classroom and office will have a plastic recycling bin and a separate bin for paper. Students will collect the items from each bin on a regular basis and deposit them in the green recycling dumpster behind the cafeteria, where Leon County will pick up the items.

Faculty members who will coordinate the student Green Teams this year are Sal Guastella and the Spanish Club for high school, Dennis Martina and the ESE students for middle school, and 5thgrade teacher Tati Echevarria Calderon for elementary school. Please contact these teachers for any recycling questions.

The PTSA last year also obtained several white recycling barrels and placed them around campus and in the athletic fields area for additional collection points for bottle and can recycling. Please use these for bottle and can recycling only, and not trash.

On the beautification front, your PTSA dues and fundraising money has been put to good use. We bought and planted more than 60 trees around campus over the past six years to gradually transform a former cow pasture into an inviting and forested place of learning. Areas like the elementary school playground where the trees were planted in 2005 are starting to show the results of trees reaching maturity-providing students with shelter from the harmful rays of the sun-and over the next several years the rest of campus hopefully will follow. The GGG committee will continue with tree planting this winter with the addition of another batch of trees as our budget allows.

Anyone having any questions or ideas or wishing to volunteer for GGG projects please contact committee chair Danni Vogt at dannivogt@embarqmail.com or 877-5641.

Reflections Committee

Any Florida High students feeling artistic? The PTSA is once again sponsoring the Reflections national creative arts project, and the contest will begin full force toward the end of September once the state PTA finalizes the rules. This program allows students grades K through 12 to explore their artistic abilities and compete for awards in various categories by submitting original works under this year’s theme: “Diversity means…” Students may submit works in any or all of six arts areas: literature, photography, musical composition, film production, dance choreography, and visual arts (including drawing, painting, print making and collage). All entries will be due by Friday December 2, 2011.

We have had hundreds of Florida High students participate in this contest over the past few years with several county-wide and state-wide student winners taking home cash awards. We will again work with faculty to incorporate contest entries into their curricula or give extra class credit for submissions. Entry forms and details will be posted to the PTSA website and distributed to faculty and parents later in September-keep a lookout for listserve emails and paper notices sent home with students for further details.

We also will be looking for parents with an artistic or literary background to serve as judges or otherwise help with publicity and coordination of this important program, so if you’re interested contact either Reflections committee co-chair: Danni Vogt (dannivogt@embarqmail.com or 877-5641) or Precious Boatwright (preciousone72@yahoo.com) for more information.

Again this year we are collecting Box Tops, Campbell’s Labels for Education, Tyson A+ and community coffee labels. We are encouraging participation from ALL grade levels K-12 and everyone will benefit from collecting!

A parent letter and 2 “Back to School” collection sheets should have come home with ALL Elementary students this week explaining the programs and incentives. Secondary students did NOT receive a letter, but all secondary teachers DID and hopefully passed on this information.

All secondary students who participate by turning in labels will each receive small incentives and the 2 highest collectors will receive a $10 gift card to Itunes.

All Elementary students who participate will each receive a goodie bag and the 2 highest collectors will receive a $10 gift card to a book store or Chick-Fil-A.

There are 3 promotions on the Box Tops Website which include Totino’s Pizza and Hanes. After logging in click “EARN” at the top of the page and under this tab click “BONUS BOX TOPS” and enter for a chance to win.

There is one promotion on the Campbell’s website which is a chance to win $45,000 worth of computer’s, smartboards, and other things for our school.

Publix also runs promotions and there is one at this time. The website is http://clickcallmail.com/ Create an account and vote for our school (Florida State University School) and we could win 100,000 Bonus Box Tops.

If anyone would like to use the 1 pt., 5 pt. or 10 pt. collection sheets you can log on to the Campbell’s Website @ http://www.labelsforeducation.com/ and download any of these collection sheets. For every page filled we received extra points of the value; either 1, 5 or 10 pts.

Reading Program

The FSUS PTSA reading committee is here to encourage our students to READ, READ, READ! Working together with our librarian Ms. Underhill, and Mr. Trafford, a goal of 40,000 AR points was established for our students this year. When students achieve this goal, we will celebrate their success with a fun-filled beach themed party in May. For those who may not be familiar with the accelerated reader program (AR), it is the method our FSUS teachers use to measure the amount of reading as well as the level of reading comprehension of our students. Every nine weeks teachers set reading goals for each of their students, measured in number of AR points earned. Our elementary students earned 9,784 AR points for the first nine weeks of school!

On Friday October 28th, the PTSA threw a Popsicle party for the 440 FSUS elementary students who reached their AR goal during the first nine weeks. We are very proud to have so many successful readers during our first grading period. Our students are off to a great start and a fun time was had by all! Way to go Seminole readers!! We will have a PTSA-sponsored celebration to reward students each nine weeks leading up to our exciting 40,000 point party at the end of the school year.

The PTSA reading committee also plans to host authors to speak to both the middle school and high school students. We look forward to announcing these events as the year moves forward and encouraging reading among our older students as well.

Thank you for supporting the FSUS PTSA and for encouraging your FSUS student to read! We are off to a great start!

Our first Donuts for Dads event was a huge success.  Thank you to the Dads and other father figures who brought their children to participate in the early morning event.  We’ll plan at least two more of these morning events during the year and hope to see everyone again.

The next Dads program is called, “Me and My Dad Reading Night”.  Geared toward fathers and children in the elementary grades, 2nd – 4th,  this event is an interactive type reading program that should get kids excited about reading. Dads are encouraged to “get into” the story and encourage creativity within their groups. This isn’t quiet reading time at the library. We are expecting for things to get loud once everyone has a chance to read their books. The FSUS PTSA will provide food and drinks for a cost of $5 per family. PTSA members will pay $3 per family for food. Each participant is also encouraged to wear (or bring) long tube socks to the event–preferably clean…  If there is time at the end of the night we’ll finish up with a “Knock your Socks off” game. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 8, from 6:30 – 8 p.m.  The event takes place in the FSUS Tomahawk Café. For more information, please send an email to leonpta1@yahoo.com.

International Walk to School Day

Wednesday, October 5th marked International Walk to School Day. Florida State University Schools celebrated the event with 43 student walkers, numerous parents, and some very special guests. Tallahassee Mayor, John Marks, and his wife, Jane led us in some pre-walk stretches. Leon County Commissioner, Kristin Dozier, joined us, along with employees from the Florida Department of Health and our very own FSUS Principal, Neal Trafford!

Two FSU Campus bicyclist police officers escorted our walkers as we left Southwood’s Town Center and headed toward FSUS. Firemen from Tallahassee Fire Station Number 6 were displayed their fire engine. Local CBS affiliate, WCTV, captured the excitement which was aired on the local 5:30pm evening news. If you missed it, here is a link to the aired segment:

Please join us this Wednesday, November 2nd for FSUS Walking Wednesday. We will depart at 7:30am from the parking lot behind The Wharf Express Restaurant (Four Oaks Blvd. & Merchant’s Row). You are able to drop your child off at 7:15am, the Walking School Bus will depart promptly at 7:30am in order to arrive to school on time. Parents and siblings are welcome to join the fun!

Letters from the President – November 2011

"Do Something Good For Someone Elsel!"

This is my challenge for our families in this month of Thanksgiving. Step outside of your "box" and do something as a family or individually for someone else. Like:

  • Drop a bag of groceries to a shelter.
  • Walk your elderly neighbor’s dog.
  • Cook a meal for a college student.
  • Wash your teacher or prinipal’s car.
  • Give books & toys to a kid’s "home"

I would love to know how you reached out this month! I will send out a special Thanksgiving Message listing those wonderful things you did. Simply click here and complete the anonymous survey between now and November 23rd.

THANKING you from the heart….

UPDATE …. 2011 Turkey Trot and Team Florida High

Thank you to all the Florida High students and family members that came out in support of our team in the 36th running of the Tallahassee Turkey Trot Thanksgiving morning! At press time we were still awaiting news if we had won the Kent Vann Award of Excellence contest. Over 5100 people participated in the various races in the Southwood neighborhood. 3,305 ran in the 5k race and 1,010 in the 1 mile Gobbler. These two races were the most popular of the 4 races offered.

We had approximately 30 elementary students and about as many parents and family members that participated in either the one mile or 5k race. Weather conditions were a bit brisk, but nice for running. Here’s hoping you’ll include the Turkey Trot as an annual Thanksgiving family tradition. Thanks again and GO TEAM FLORIDA HIGH!
