Letters from the President – September 2010

Dear FSUS Parents,

Nike was paraphrasing one of our founding fathers, when they coined the campaign, “Just do it.”  American statesman Ben Franklin wrote many words of wisdom in his lifetime.  He hoped that his wise sayings would give people guidance for living their daily lives. He once said, “Speak little, do much.”

These words have become a personal mantra of sorts in my life.  Instead of talking about how I can help improve and grow our school, and instead of standing on the sidelines criticizing every failing, I am devoted to “… do much.” This month I ask you to focus on everything good that is Florida High and use our organization as a sounding board and as a conduit for your input, insight and advice. Click here to leave your anonymous notes in my cyber COMMENT BOX. Our administration is always working for your child.

Today, we all lead hyper- busy lives.  We are raising kids, working in or out of the home, and juggling bills and schedules like circus pros.  But, together with your PTSA, we can use your help to “do much.”

Sincerely,
Robin Spillias

Garnet, Gold and Green Committee

Garnet Gold & Green Committee to take recycling to a new level!

This is the inaugural year for the PTSA’s Garnet, Gold & Green Committee and we will focus on more improvements in our recycling program, planting more trees, general campus beautification, playground maintenance, and other projects that will teach our kids how to make the world a better place.

RECYCLING: In the elementary school, 5th grade teachers Mrs. Wilkinson and Ms. Warner have spearheaded a wonderful student initiative called the Green Team. Each Friday morning their team empties the new green (paper) and blue (bottle/cans) recycling bins from the classrooms and other key areas. The PTSA will help to focus new recycling efforts at athletic events that generate huge amounts of plastic, while in the high school, Mr. Guastella and the Spanish Club tackle the recycling there. PTSA is seeking to develop a similar program in the middle school, so teacher and parent volunteers need apply!!

GREENING:  PTSA’s tree-planting efforts on campus have produced more than 50 new shade trees over the past 5 years, with places like the elementary school playground already showing positive results. This winter we will continue turning a former cow pasture into an appealing educational environment that offers respite from the harsh rays of the sun. We will also work with school maintenance officials to improve the elementary school playground and the rest of campus.

Anyone interested in joining the Green Team or volunteering on any of these projects should contact Mr. Guastella, Mrs. Wilkinson, Ms. Warner, or me at dannivogt@embarqmail.com or 877-5641.

PTSA Fundraising

PTSA has officially kicked off our Fall Fundraiser with Great American Fundraising.  Every student Grades K-12 had a kick off on Tuesday, August 31st  in the GYM and was given a fundraising packet filled with information to bring home.

Again this year we are having a catalog fundraiser with lots of great items to choose from.  Students can sell to family, friends, neighbors, etc. (we don’t promote door to door sales) and again we have the online store for anyone who lives out of town that might be interested in helping your students and their school.  This information is found on the information sheet.

Also, we are doing the individual Catalog Booklet, “Reach Out Catalog” which your student can fill out with at least 7 names to anyone interested in purchasing magazines.  Each student will receive a special prize for returning their booklets.

Every student that sells at least 5 items from the Main Catalog will be able to see the incentive show on Tuesday, November 2nd.  This show is a BMX Bike Show: Ron Thomas, Levi’s Jean Riding Team Rise Above Entertainment.  http://www.riseabovebmx.com/

All 7th – 12th graders that sell atleast 5 items will receive 5 hours of Community Service and if they sell 10 items or more they will receive 10 hours of Community Service.

The top selling students in Grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 will each receive a $25 gift card to Best Buy.

Our goal this year is to make of profit of $20,000 and the money we raise will be used for Teacher/Staff Appreciation week, teacher training, senior scholarships, teacher mini grants, health and safety fairs, bike rodeo, miscellaneous K-12 student events, etc..   The Reach Out Booklet is part of the fundraiser but not the main fundraiser.  We receive a % of this money, but the catalog sales are our main fundraiser and count towards the students 5 or more items.

The fundraiser will run from Tuesday, August 31st – Monday, September 13th with all money due by Friday, September 17th.  We are looking forward to a successful fundraiser and THANK EVERONE in advance for your support! If for any reason anyone is unable to sell items from the catalog, we do accept donations and checks can be made out to:  FSUS/PTSA and please include your students name on the check.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks to EVERYONE for your support in making this a success!!

Sincerely,

Fundraising Chair

Reflections Art Contest Announced! Theme: “Together We Can!”

The FSUS PTSA once again kicks off the Reflections national creative arts project.  This school wide program allows students grades K – 12 to explore their artistic abilities and compete for awards in various categories.  Students may submit works in any of six arts areas: literature, photography, visual arts, music composition, film production, and choreography.  Participating students may be recognized on a school, county, state or even national level and will be able to explore their artistic abilities in the process!

This year’s theme is “Together We Can…”.  All entries should be an expression of the student’s interpretation of this topic and are due by November 22nd, 2010  at 3 pm.   Watch your FSUS listserve and PTSA website for more information on how to enter and contest requirements.

The impact of the arts on our kids is invaluable in so many ways!  We hope that many of our students will choose to participate in this wonderful program!
