    Reflections Art Contest

    Theme: “Together We Can!”
The FSUS PTSA once again kicks off the Reflections national creative arts project.  This school wide program allows students grades K – 12 to explore their artistic abilities and compete for awards in various categories.  Students may submit works in any of six arts areas: literature, photography, visual arts, music composition, film production, and choreography.  Participating students may be recognized on a school, county, state or even national level and will be able to explore their artistic abilities in the process!

This year’s theme is “Together We Can…”.  All entries should be an expression of the student’s interpretation of this topic and are due by November 22nd, 2010  at 3 pm.   Watch your FSUS listserve and PTSA website for more information on how to enter and contest requirements.

The impact of the arts on our kids is invaluable in so many ways!  We hope that many of our students will choose to participate in this wonderful program!

    Big Top for Big Readers!

The circus-themed Accelerated Reader (AR) Challenge recently kicked off on September 24th.  Currently, Mr. Trafford has challenged students to earn 40,000 points this year. Each elementary class is also voting on the “special performance” that Mr. Trafford will reward them with if they earn 40,000 points. Visit the cafeteria and check out our circus elephant who’s keeping track of our AR points!

The PTSA final AR Challenge reward will be a special perfomance by PageTurner Adventures!

    Garnet Gold and Green Committee

The PTSA’s Garnet, Gold and Green Committee is working to improve the recycling situation on campus and so far paper, bottles and cans are being recycled weekly in the elementary and high school areas by student volunteers who collect items from each classroom and transport them to the bin behind the cafeteria.  No official recycling program exists in the middle school yet, and we are still seeking a faculty member or student group to volunteer to get this program going in this area.  Thanks to Mrs. Wilkinson, Ms. Tuttle, Sr. Guastella and the high school Spanish Club for their tireless efforts to make this a reality.

We are working with FSU and the Coca-Cola company to get some large recycling collection bins like those used at Campbell Stadium for our gym and outdoor athletic areas, where hundreds of recyclable items are now simply being thrown in the trash.  The events produce plastic, aluminum, cardboard and cooking oil, all of which are recyclable.  Free admission to home football games has been arranged for any students willing to work 30 minutes or so on recycling at the games (limit 3), so contact me as noted below if you are interested.  By later this year, we expect this program to be fully functioning.  The school’s cardboard recycling program will also be examined.

In the winter, we will be initiating the Teracycle program at Florida High that turns otherwise unrecyclable garbage into useful products.  This is a fun and educational program for all ages where students collect tens of thousands of specific items and send them to New Jersey-based Teracycle, which pays cash money in return.  The company then creates innovative items from the garbage and sells them in local stores.  Purses made out of used Capri Sun juice box containers are just one of the recognizable results of  this program.  For more details, visit www.teracycle.net or watch the TV show Garbage Moguls on the National Geographic Channel.

Don’t forget to visit our booth at the Fall Carnival October 29 where we will be distributing healthy snacks and beads.

Anyone interested in joining the green team or volunteering on any of these projects should contact Mr. Guastella, Mrs. Wilkinson or Ms. Tuttle, or me at  dannivogt@embarqmail.com or 877-5641.
