Wellness & Safety Committee – WELLNESS REPORT

Gardening-related: A sign-up sheet for those wishing to participate in the elementary school garden should be out shortly.  A meeting with a Leon County Extension agent (who has worked with Florida High in the past) will take place the first week of November for planning purposes.   Seeds/plants will then be obtained with a planting to follow soon after.  We expect that the school’s Builders Club will be involved in the gardening initiative including assisting with mentoring the younger children.

Media education activities:  Access to employ some initial media education activities (lesson plans)  are being requested through a nationally-recognized media expert.  These lesson plans will be available for potential use with teachers who may be able to use them as an adjunct in their classrooms (for use with elementary and/or secondary students).  A nationally recognized media literacy expert (who was a recent keynote speaker at the State of Florida’s Prevention Conference) is being contacted for potential educational presentations (subject to funding) to students (with a possibility of some teacher training).

Financial health :  An individual at a local credit union has been contacted about offering financial simulation training for teens at Florida High.  This program has been offered locally and has been well received.

Membership

PTSA is Thankful for its Members!

We are thankful for the freedom to join and participate with the largest volunteer child advocacy association in the nation. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) reminds our country of its obligations to children and provides parents and families with a powerful voice to speak on behalf of every child while providing the best tools for parents to help their children be successful students. You can be a part of this great resource when joining the FSUS PTSA.

For more than 100 years, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has provided support, information and resources to families focused on the health and education of children. The organization was founded in 1897 in Washington DC as the National Congress of Mothers by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst. If not for these women and their vision and determination, there would not be a PTA-an organization that has been woven into the very fabric of American life.

PTA is a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for the education and well-being of every child.

We cannot act alone – we need every Parent, Student, Teacher, Faculty, Staff, and Grandparent to Join!  It’s simple – fill out the membership form and return to your child’s teacher or the front office today along with membership dues today!

Parent/Guardian $10.00    Student$5.00
Grandparent $3.00             Teacher/Staff $5.00

Garnet Gold and Green Committee – G3

We need your cans!!  Aluminum can challenge kicks off for National Recycling Day Nov. 15

Florida High will pull out all the stops to collect more aluminum cans in the next three weeks than any other  school in Leon  County.  The PTSA’s Garnet, Gold and Green Committee is spearheading our school’s participation in the nationwide “Recycling Starts with I CAN” challenge where schools will collect aluminum drink cans in conjunction with National Recycling Day Nov. 15.  Cans will be turned in November 20, and the school that collects the most cans before then will win a gift certificate, as well as get paid by the pound for all cans collected.  The PTSA will use the funds collected for various school improvement projects.

We are asking all PTSA members to take up the challenge.  Students and parents should bring their cans to class and place them in the classroom recycling bins where they will be collected and separated by our elementary, middle and high school recycling teams.  The PTSA will turn in the cans on November 20.  For more information, check the insert in your city utility bill or visit http://www.talgov.com/communications/pdf/1010ns.pdf, or contact Danni Vogt, PTSA Garnet, Gold and Green Committee Chair at dannivogt@embarqmail.com.  Also watch for our Terracycle program starting in January.
