I hope you and your family had a safe summer and you are looking forward to another wonderful year at FSUS. Let me share something with you, and I mean it sincerely: ”I love our school!”

Our school means so much to me and my family and I hope that you feel the same way. I talk to people almost every week who say, “I would love for my kid(s) to go to Florida High.” I truly believe it is a privilege to be part of a school that was originally established in 1857! We have come so far, and each and every year we grow stronger and better.

One way to show our support for the school is to join the PTSA.

Your PTSA wants to share with you and your family so many amazing things in this next year!

My hope is that our community sees us as an exemplary model of education and service. One of our goals this year is create some amazing educational enhancement programs and grow the already strong programming we have provided our students year after year.

Simply stated your PTSA is Promoting Total Student Achievement !

You already know that PTSA is a support network between our parents, teachers and students. None of our goals can be reached when the “p” (parents) the “t” (teachers) the “s” (students) are not in close “a” (association). Having you as a member allows us to grow that network and much more!

Please take this journey with me and our incredible Board made up of moms and dads like you and me. With your help our school will continue to inspire and grow amazing students year after year.

What a summer it has been for our administration and faculty at FSUS! There are so many “behind the scenes” things happening throughout the summer with everyone moving into hyperdrive in the weeks leading up to the first day of school. In this week before school starts, PTSA has had the pleasure of working with your teachers and administration on some of those important preparations. Thank you to our early parent and student volunteers! We had a phenomenal core of “student elves” to collate and stuff the more than 1,700 student packets all in under three hours. WOW! Thank you!

PTSA hosted the annual WELCOME BACK breakfast where we nearly had a nearly 100% membership commitment! We are on our way to a record breaking memebership drive and we need you to renew your dues asap! Please watch as we update our website www.FSUSPTSA.com this week and download the new membership form.

Senior Scholarships!

Seniors still have the opportunity to submit a scholarship application for the FSUS PTSA scholarships. Each scholarship category requires that the senior volunteers for a PTSA activity during their senior year. Seniors still have the opportunity to participate with supporting PTSA by volunteering to help with the Spring Garden Club. Only those applications that meet this requirement will be qualified to be considered for the designated scholarship category. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on May 24, 2010!

Turn in your application to staff in the front office on time! Awards will be announced at Project Graduation and scholarship winners will be notified after this event.

Good luck and don’t procrastinate! Volunteer, study and fill out your application!

Note: Students who have already submitted applications without PTSA volunteer service included may resubmit that section if the volunteer service is updated and documented.

Letters from the President - May 2010

Dear FSUS Families,

We are honoring the teachers and staff of FSUS this week with a full schedule of fun activities, events and meals. A huge thank you goes out to those of you who have signed up to help with our school-wide events and to those of you planning special treats on your own for the teachers. If you still wish to volunteer please click here for any available opportunities.

This weekend marks a first for FSUS - hosting the Relay for Life. FSUS PTSA and other teams from the school and local community will be out walking the track from 6pm on Friday to noon on Saturday to raise money and awareness. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. There is still time to purchase a Luminary in honor or memory of someone you know. If you wish to know more click here.

Our April meeting started off with a very moving moment of silence by Mrs. Searight in honor of Missy Reeves, Caleb Smith and Mary Stewart. She revealed that the Cafeteria plans a Memory Garden for everyone to enjoy. We also enjoyed a special performance of Mrs. Hirai’s elementary choir. We celebrated our Reflections participants and thanked our outgoing Executive Board for the tremendous job they did this year. We then elected and installed the new officers for the 2010-2011 school year. Your new FSUS PTSA officers are:

Reflections Committee

Thanks to all the PTSA members whose dues permitted me to give out $680.00 in prize money to the 28 Florida High students who were finalists in this school year’s Reflections creative arts contest. Rewarding students for creativity and making the extra effort to produce an artwork was money well spent. Thanks again to all the students, faculty, judges and parents who helped make this a reality. Prizes were distributed at the end of April, and any students who participated in the contest who still have not received their prize or certificate should contact me.

Any members with an artistic bent willing to help make the Reflections program a reality for the 2010-11 school year please contact Robin Spillias, Florida High PTSA president, or myself at dannivogt@embarqmail.com.

PTSA Scholarships

Seniors still have the opportunity to apply for FSUS PTSA senior scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded at the senior Project Graduation event on June 4, 2010. Right now, we don’t have enough qualified entries to present awards this year. Look for more information within a few days regarding the FSUS PTSA scholarships.

Recycling Committee

Project Graduation

Get ready to celebrate! Parents and faculty are working toward making this year’s Project Graduation a successful event. Project Graduation is a chemical-free (no drugs or alcohol) graduation night all-night celebration that is open to all seniors. Some details are still being worked out so look for more information later this week. Start thinking now about ways that you can contribute to the success of this event for our seniors.
