Letter from the President - August 2008

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Dear FSUS Family,

Thank you for joining FSUS PTSA.  I am honored to serve as your PTSA President for the 2008-2009 school year.  I was the Technology Chair for the past two years and served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the FSUS Playground Project.  That project really demonstrated what our school and our community can achieve when we pursue a common goal.  Your PTSA Executive Board is very excited to welcome you back to school this month.

Our theme this year is “We’re All in This Together.”   As parents and family members, teachers and staff, students and community members we all have a stake in making FSUS the best environment for our children.  Over the coming school year our educators and our children will each spend over 1,200 hours at the Florida High campus.  Our goal is to help make their “home away from home” as productive, comfortable and safe as possible to promote a dynamic learning environment.  As proud participants in the FSU research school we should expect nothing less for our students.

The first thing you can do for your student is to join or renew your membership in FSUS PTSA.  The FSUS PTSA is a K-12 volunteer organization dedicated to making Florida High the most special place it can be.  Our members contribute to the learning environment at Florida High by supporting our educators with over $5,000 in teacher mini-grants and with back-to-school, holiday and teacher-staff appreciation events.  The PTSA supports book fairs and reading events, Reflections art competition, FCAT snacks, playground maintenance, school gardens, health and safety fair, bike rodeo, wellness activities, scholarships and funding of graduation activities.  As a local unit of PTA we also have a Legislative Affairs liaison monitoring any legislation on a national, state or local level that affects our students.

We are proud to bring you programs such as school-wide recycling, media literacy and safe routes to school.  We have a great new fundraiser planned for this fall that will help us achieve our goals and allow our students and families to work together to bring an exciting BMX show to all of our students. We are hosting three PTSA General Assembly meetings this year and bringing back spirit nights and family fun nights.
Because your time is precious, we will keep you informed about what is happening in our school through this monthly electronic newsletter, Council Oak, and through our webpage www.fsus.fsu.edu/parents/ptsa/.

I believe that whether we work or we stay home, whether we live close by or far away, whether our student is in elementary, middle or high school, we are all in this together.  There will be many opportunities to volunteer and to participate over the upcoming school year.   Your time is valuable and appreciated whether it is for an occasional hour or a more regular time commitment.   Our first volunteer opportunity is the “Welcome Back Breakfast” for FSUS teachers and staff on Monday, August 11.  We need casseroles!  Click here to sign up.

Again, welcome back to another wonderful year at Florida High. I look forward to seeing you at our first FSUS General Assembly Meeting in September.

Sincerely,

Kasey Chapin

PTSA Membership Renewal

This is just a reminder that your PTSA membership must renewed annually.

One of the biggest pluses this year for renewing, aside from supporting the many endeavors the PTSA spearheads at the school, you will be entered into a drawing to have one of your children’s activity fees reimbursed to you.  If you are a teacher, you will be entered into a drawing for $250  in matching funds for a teacher mini-grant.  That’s a total of $500 for things you might need for your classroom.

For more details on this drawing, click here.

Ways You Can Support the School

Box Tops LogoBox Tops, Campbell’s Education, Tyson A+ and Community Coffee

Every year, a few faithful PTSA volunteers collect, sort, and bag hundreds of Box Tops, Campbell’s, Tyson and Community Coffee labels that are redeemable for money for our school.
This is free money folks!  Prizes are given by grade (K-2 and 3-5) to those students with the most collected labels for each of the time periods throughout the year.  In addition, an end of the year pizza party will be given to the elementary class with the most labels collected.
For more information and the collection dates for ‘08-’09, please click here.

Office Depot Back To School (5%)

When you purchase items at Office Depot, 5% of your total purchase will given to FSUS.  Just tell the cashier to credit your purchase toward  the FSUS account.  Our school will receive a check from them a couple of times throughout the year.  Again, free money!  And for things you will be buying anyways.  For more details,

Target Stores
Anytime you make a purchase at Target stores, with your Target credit card, a portion will go to our school.  For more information,

Fall Fundraiser

Fall Fundraiser - August 25 - September 2

BMX bikerThe PTSA funds many programs, projects and scholarship for teachers and students throughout the year.

The fall fundraiser will kick off on August 25th.  This year we are using a company named Great American Fundraising.  Many different items such as wrapping paper, candy, and gift items will be for sale..  There will also be a catalog featuring handcrafted gifts.

Great American has established “Project Centers” in Africa that focus on improving the lives of the workers they serve.  Projects assist employees with fair wages, clean, sanitary working conditions, health care assistance, and a commitment to provide sustainable income which transforms their lives.  When you purchase something out of this catalog, you not only help our school, you are simultaneously transforming lives far away.

The exciting part of this fundraiser is that if we meet our school wide goal, we will have a world champion BMX performer, Matt Wilhelm come to our school and perform a BMX show!

Our students will also receive service hour credits for sales made as this fundraiser will be supporting a humanitarian endeavor.

Look for more information to come home with your child beginning on August 25th.  The fundraiser will continue until September 2nd.

Annual Boo Hoo Breakfast

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Each year the PTSA holds a Boo Hoo (and for some of you, it may be a Yahoo!) Breakfast on the first day of school.  This is for kindergarten parents and new parents to the school to commiserate or rejoice as their child starts school.
Come and join us under the tent near the front office building!  Tissues will be available.

We need 2-3 volunteers! If you would like to help out with the breakfast, please contact Lori Fitzpatrick .

Back to School Teacher Breakfast

Monday, August 11th, 2008

In August 2007, the PTSA sponsored a Back-To- School Breakfast for the faculty and staff.  It was such a success that we have decided to hold it again this year.  The breakfast will take place on Friday, August 15 at 8:30 am in the cafeteria.

If you would like help out with the breakfast or contribute a breakfast casserole or breakfast bread of some sort, please click here .

If you have any further questions,  you may contact Kasey Chapin, PTSA President.
