Holiday Cards for Troops in Bagdad, Iraq

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Florida High is currently collecting holiday cards to send to troops in Iraq during this holiday season.

Scott Slik, a former soldier, is spearheading this endeavor, and is inviting the Florida High family to participate in encouraging our men and women in uniform in Iraq with holiday cards.  They will be sent to the current Chaplain of Mr. Slik’s command in Bagdad.

All cards are welcome, whether generated by adult or student, but cards of older students, in particular, would be greatly appreciated, as these students are closer in age to many of the soldiers themselves.

*In order to maintain confidentiality, please remind students to sign the cards with their FIRST NAME ONLY.

All cards will be collected on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25TH, in order to get them shipped out in time for the holidays.  Please have your student turn them in to his/her first period teacher.  Teachers will take it from there!

What a great project to have students work on over the Thanksgiving Holidays, as we reflect on all we have to be thankful for!

*Please note, all cards will be screened by the Chaplain and staff.  Please do not include any political statements or sentiments, as these cards will not be shared with the troops.  They need encouraging words at these times.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Take Care,

Letter from the President - November 2008

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

Dear FSUS Families,

Since November is the traditional time to appreciate our blessings, let me take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has joined FSUS PTSA this year and who has given their time to support our activities.

A huge thank you goes to our faculty!  This is a record year for teacher memberships.  Another huge thank you to our FSUS families!  We had more participation from middle and high school families for our fall fundraiser than ever before.  A huge thank you to our Executive Board for all their time, effort and planning!  A huge thank you to our hard-working Committee Chairs!

New committees like Family Fun Nights have held Spirit Nights at Beef O’Brady’s and Chick-Fil-A and are planning some great new events.  Our Recycling Committee has distributed new containers on campus and is working with existing recycling efforts to make our campus more environmentally aware and responsible.  Our Reading Programs Committee is back and working on a new Reading Challenge for the elementary kids.  Our Health & Safety Committee is working hard on the school gardens and on rescheduling the Bike Rodeo.  We are also looking forward to our developing Room Parents program.

Our volunteers are the best and whether they are distributing fundraising products or tending to our school garden they are worth their weight in gold!  I know many of you are hoping for an opportunity to volunteer.  November will provide many chances from helping collect food for the Second Harvest to working at the Thanksgiving Luncheon.

Please know that you are an important member of the FSUS PTSA team supporting our students, teachers, staff and administrators.

We’re all in this together!.

Kasey Chapin
PTSA President

Second Harvest Fall Food Drive Begins Monday, Nov. 3rd

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

What can one can do? Empty Can

Starting on Monday, November 3rd, the PTSA will begin its Second Harvest Fall Food Drive. Students may bring in nutritious, non-perishable items to their 1st period class for collection.

These items will benefit families in the area whose children have been chosen for the Back Pack Program.  At the end of each week, these student receive a “back pack” full of food items to carry them through the weekend.

Consider giving at least one can..more if you are able. Last Fall, almost 1,000 lbs of food was collected.  Last Spring, nearly 1,300 lbs.  How about 1,600 for this Fall?

Show us what you’re made of Florida High!

Want to sign up to help on collection Friday at 8:30 am?  Click here.

If you have any questions, e-mail Julie Lengacher.
