Reflections Committee
Florida High tenth grader Samantha Davis recently won a prestigious Award of Merit from the Florida PTSA for her visual arts entry in the nationwide Reflections art contest. Her entry under the theme “Diversity is…” came in second place in the entire state, beating hundreds of similar visual arts submissions from other high school students throughout Florida. Samantha’s artwork was done in Ms. Barrett-Hayes class, and used Sharpie pens to draw several human figures over a coffee-stain background, representing the diversity of Tallahassee’s population.
According to Ms. Barret-Hayes, Samantha is a prolific artist who has already sold works to several local businesses. She is in her second year of art in a Drawing and Painting II class and a Portfolio class. In addition to the $50 prize she already received from the Florida High PTSA in January, Samantha will receive a ribbon and certificate from the statewide PTSA and her artwork will tour the state with other contest champs. Samantha was the only contest winner from Leon County, and she came in second to Alexis Vazquez from Bloomingdale High School in Hillsborough County. This is Samantha’s second year at Florida High; she previously attended Raa.

It is that time of year again. Second quarter progress reports have gone out, FCAT and SAT10 are looming in the distance – and you have that “project” that you’ve been meaning to develop into your curriculum but just can’t find the time or necessary funds to pull it off.
