"Art Works!"
Monument Being Designed for FSUS
School Gardens
On Monday, April 23, the FSUS Art Department will be conducting an aluminum casting on campus.  Students from the art classes of Debi Barrett Hayes, Barbara Davis, and Pamela Wallheiser, will design a monument to  be cast and erected in the school garden.

This is the culminating event of a year-long project called "Art Works!" that included the study of why humans create monuments and memorials, the New Deal under FDR and the many public works undertaken by artists in that social program, and how the work of artists like Maya Lin (Vietnam War Memorial) ushered in a new era for public memorials.

Eighty-one students and six teachers from Florida High travelled by bus to Washington D.C. to see memorials on The Mall (Vietnam War and Nurses, Korean), the FDR memorial, and the Holocaust Museum. Students planned lessons for the bus trip around several documentaries on topics such as the creation and modern ceremonies of Arlington National Cemetery and the controversy around Maya Lin's design for the Vietnam War Memorial.

In the coming weeks the students will design three panels made up of smaller
segments to be cast in aluminum and mounted onto a steel framework. Once
this is cemented into the ground in the school garden a brick enclosure will
be built around the base with flowers planted within.

If any parents can help, we need donations of red brick, concrete and could really use some expertise to make sure the brick is laid properly.  Students will do any lifting or moving of donated materials.

Call Barbara Davis at x-3745 or Debi Barrett Hayes at x-3744 for more information.

A Message from the President
Susan Epstein

Given the allergy season we are in the midst of, I am hoping that the old adage about April being the month of "showers" proves true!  However, if we can't get the weather to cooperate, I know of one place where you are certain to find a "showering" of April activities; on the campus of Florida State University Schools.

Let's see, in April already we have the school-wide spring fair, the elementary field day, the elementary talent show, the PTSA sponsored week-long book fair entitled "Catch a Reading Wave," and the families read together day.  This list doesn't even include the activities going on with other clubs on campus, like the drama club, all spring sports clubs, service organizations, etc. There really is so much we can choose to be involved in or with at FSUS during the month of April.

So, as real April rains bring real May flowers, think about the kinds of "flowers" we hope to produce in the hearts, minds and characters of our children, pre-teens and teenagers.  As parents and teachers, we are such an integral part of this "flowering" process when we "shower" our involvement in our children's activities; day after day, week after week, season after season.

Kind Regards,

Heidi Abernethy
President

PTSA Legislative Update
Susan Epstein

The Florida PTA has been hard at work tracking bills in the 2007 legislative session. To access an extensive list of education and child-related bills, please go to www.floridapta.org and select 2007 Legislative Bills Tracked by Florida PTA. You'll find updates such as House Bill 1257, relating to the Green Schools Pilot Project/Education. Sponsored by Curtis Richardson, the bill was voted on favorably by the Committee on Education Innovation & Career Preparation and is now in the Schools and Learning Council.

On April 16, representatives from the FSUS PTSA will attend the Florida PTA legislative workshop in Tallahassee.  That week, we hope to meet with as many legislators as possible to thank them for their hard work and share information with them on various issues.  If you or your student would like to participate in this activity, please contact me at sepstein@admin.fsu.edu.
