Arts & Crafts Fair & Paint-A-Pot this Saturday

The FSUS Art Department invites you to the 4th annual Arts and Crafts Fair this Saturday, December 8, from 9AM to 3PM in and around the FSUS Cafeteria.

Over 40 vendors will be selling handmade arts and crafts. The Fair is a great place to purchase holiday gifts (some items are priced under $3).

Santa will be here from 1PM - 2PM for photos. You may bring your own camera or purchase professinal prints from the Art Department.

There will be food and drinks and a wonderful raffle with drawings all day long.

While you are at the Fair please stop by the High School Art room for "Paint-A-Pot."  Similar to "Waddle Pots", we will have many lovely bisqueware pots, ranging from coffee cups and small bowls up to large serving platters.  The costs are VERY reasonable. You and your child can glaze your pottery, and we will fire it up. All pots will be fired and ready for pick up by the following week.

Parents: Please note that both the Craft Fair and Paint-A-Pot require adult supervision for young children.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Latin Club Collecting Soda Can Tabs

Latin Club is still collecting soda can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Latin club will be collecting until the end of the school year.  When you have enough to fill a zip lock bag, please turn it in to Mr. Bebergal, Room 3-134.  Middle and High School students can earn an hour of community service for each bag. Thank you for your help.

NHS Fall Carnival

The National Honor Society of Florida High would like to thank all the parents, faculty, staff, and students who participated and assisted in the
Fall Carnival this year. Because of everyone's participation and contribution the carnival went smoothly and was a great success. We hope to
have further opportunities such as this with the greater FSUS community.

Thanks!

Food Drive Report
Second Harvest Food Drive
The PTSA would like to again thank all the faculty, parents and students who donated food items and toiletries to benefit Second Harvest of the Big Bend.  With a week's worth of collections,  Florida High donated over 1,000 pounds of food and toiletries!  I am so pleased and impressed with the generosity I see in our school.  Thank you!

Please look for a different food drive in the Spring. The PTSA is still
hammering out the details, but the idea is for each classroom to fill
one grocery bag with items on a "Wish List" that Second Harvest will
create.  The time frame for the drive may occur over a couple weeks, so that everyone has ample time to bring in at least one item for their
classroom bag.  If you would be interested in helping out in the Spring
with this food drive, please contact me.

December General Assembly Features
Online Family Safety Presentation
C-SAFE

Did you know:

  • 15 percent of children aged 10 to17 are sexually solicited online.
  • 9 percent of teens report being harassed online in the past year.
  • Half of these kids told no one about it!

Do you know the web sites your child visits?  Do you know who their online friends are?  Are you sure?

Cyberspace can be a hazardous place for young people.  Social networking sites like MySpace and FaceBook, while popular with kids, have become prime hangouts for pedophiles and predators.  Parents and children need to know the dangers surrounding relationships formed online and how they can keep from becoming a victim.

Please join us for the PTSA December General Assembly Meeting where Secure Florida, in conjunction with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, will be presenting "Online Family Safety."

Tuesday, December 11
Tomahawk Cafeteria
6:30PM

All Florida High families are encouraged to attend this important presentation.  Please contact me if you have any questions or would like more information.

Health & Safety Update

Healthy Snacks on Campus
The results of a new PTSA survey are in, and the volleyball and football concession stands have made a slight improvement from last year in the number of healthy snacks offered.  One (roasted peanuts) of the 25 items (4%) offered at football games met the nutrition requirements in the school Wellness Policy, and 1 (pretzels) of 20 items (5%) offered at volleyball games met the requirements.  This is a slight improvement from last year when none of the items offered met the healthy snack criteria.

The Health and Safety Committee is working with the concessionaires to improve compliance with school policy and get more healthy alternatives, and a pilot program has furnished bananas, apples, pineapple rings, raisins and veggie burgers with mixed results.  A list of snacks that meet the school requirements is also being assembled.  The school Wellness Policy requires a minimum of 20% of snacks sold at concession stands to meet healthy nutrition standards.

The PTSA will continue to monitor the snacks available at campus food outlets like the cafeteria a la carte program, concession stands, fall festival, afterschool program and various fundraisers, and report this information to the school board and the school Wellness Committee.  Thanks to Chantel Graham, Jennifer Shirley and Trish Kill for help with this project.  Any PTSA members interested in assisting with these efforts should contact me.

School Gardens

The elementary school garden is progressing nicely, with about 15 kids from K - 5th grade successfully growing several vegetables.  The kids are thinning plants, watering and weeding, and adding a load of mushroom compost donated by parent Kit Goodner to improve the soil.  They are also keeping a journal of their accomplishments.  The PTSA is exploring the possibility of merging the garden project with the after-school 4-H club beginning in the spring.

Health Fair
The tentative date for the annual PTSA Health and Safety fair is March 27, 2008, the Thursday before spring break.  Plans this year include holding the fair in the gym partially during school hours so teachers can bring their students to the exhibits.  Stay tuned for details.
