A Message from Your PTSA President

Thoughts on Voting, Freedom and Being Thankful
With the November elections just around the corner,
I have been thinking a lot about the right to vote.
Participation in the democratic process is such an
enormous privilege that we, as citizens of the
United States, have the opportunity to enjoy.
Using
our vote as our voice is a great freedom and at our
last general assembly meeting I felt even more
confident of this truth. Susan Epstein, our
Legislative Chairwoman, and Bonnie Abellera, our
Programs Chairwoman, organized a meet and greet
event with a few political candidates running for
local offices. After listening to the candidates, I
felt so grateful that I really do have a voice and a
say in who I think is the best qualified person for
any particular position in contention.
In PTSA, we want you to feel like you have a voice
and we want you to feel like every child on campus
has a voice. As an involved group and an advocacy
group, we try to provide children at the school with
opportunities that they may not regularly have, and
we are so grateful for the support you, our members,
offer. Without parents, teachers and students in
support of the association, we cease to exist.
So,
as we celebrate things we are thankful for during
the month of November, please know that PTSA
celebrates you, OUR MEMBERS! Thank you always for
your on-going, continued support and we hope you
have a very happy Thanksgiving.

Abernethy

A Letter from Mr. Trafford

Dear Parents,
Lost and Found
With the weather turning cooler, we experience a
huge increase in the number of items in our lost and
found bins. These bins are located throughout the
school for students and teachers to place items in
that have been found. We try to get our students to
look in these bins for items that have been
misplaced, but quite often, the bins are filled to
the brim. If an article of clothing has a name in
it, we will get that item back to its owner. If
not, and it goes unclaimed for more than two weeks, it
will be donated to charity. So if you have sent
clothing to school and it has not come back, please
take a few minutes and look through the lost and
found bins (one in the cafeteria, one each in
elementary, middle school, and high school buildings).
Uniform Dress Code
The Uniform Dress Code requires solid color
sweaters, sweatshirts or jackets. If you have
questions, the entire Dress Code can be found here.
Thanksgiving Dinner
Thanksgiving Dinner will be held in the cafeteria on
Thursday, November 16. We would like to invite
you to come and eat a Thanksgiving meal with your
child. If you plan to do this, please let your
child’s teacher know. Presale tickets will be
available soon.
Car Drop off and Pick up Reminder
Please make sure you pull all the way up to the
front of the car drop off area (with cones) as you
drop off in the morning. It would be helpful if all
students were ready to get out as soon as their ride
stops. In the afternoon, please pull forward to the
next number as we will ask your child(ren) to walk
up as far as possible. Thank you for your continued
support.
In Other News
We’ve had a number of great events so far this year.
Our Family Reading Day was a great success. Our
Family Book Fair night was great with our elementary
students providing the entertainment. And the Bike
Rodeo was a fun time for all. Thanks to the PTSA
and all the volunteers who give their time to make
these events possible. Look for more great
activities to come!!

Reading Programs with Mrs. Gibbons
|
|
Look out, Clifford! Torris is the "Best Read Dog" at FSUS
FSUS Elementary students have the privilege of
reading aloud to Torris,
our Elementary Therapy Dog. Every day, each
week, Torris visits my small group Reading Resource
Room. It brings a
huge smile to anyone watching to hear the students
read as Torris listens intently,
with his head resting
on the student’s lap.
Torris has a special way of bringing the best out in
each of the students. Upon completion of every
book, Torris enjoys receiving a “doggy treat” from
the students for being such a good listener.
We thank Mrs. Wendy Cook, our Elementary Guidance
Counselor for meeting the requirements and going
through the extensive training with Canine
Companions so our school could have the honor of
participating in an Assistance/Therapy Dog Program.
Thanks, Mrs. Cook and Torris, for helping to keep FSUS
an A+ School, Every Day, Every Child!

Playground Update
|
|
We Are Moving Forward
At the September 12, 2006 FSUS School Board Meeting,
the Playground Committee presented a written and
verbal report to the FSUS School Board of Directors
about the condition of the playground, including:
safety concerns, information on CCA and the
resulting arsenic excretion, strategies for
cleaning-up CCA-treated wood
and soil, fundraising options, and a variety of new
play structure
options.
The CCA-treated wooden play
structure has now been removed from
campus and steps are being taken to test the soil
for arsenic
contamination.
On October 10, 2006, the
FSUS School Board appropriated
$20,000 dollars for remediation of the site
and to
bring the
playground into compliance with general playground
safety standards.
We continue to work with the School Board and
Administrators to identify and address playground
issues.

Diabetes Awareness and Michael's Message
School Care For Kids with Diabetes
A growing number of children and adolescents have
diabetes and require care at school to ward off
serious short- and long-term complications. In an
effort to ensure that students with diabetes are
safe and healthy at school, PTA passed an important
resolution at the 2006 National PTA Convention:
Recognition
and Care of School-Age Children with. The
resolution sets out a best practices
model for school diabetes care, urging that all
school personnel receive general training on
diabetes and that every school have at least two
staff members trained to perform essential diabetes
care.
Every November, during American Diabetes Month, the
American
Diabetes Association (ADA) works to
increase public awareness about the seriousness of
diabetes and the risks associated with this disease.
FSUS parents and staff are encouraged to be aware of
the resources ADA has created to enable parents,
school nurses, teachers, and other school staff
members to provide necessary care to children with
diabetes.
Michael's
Message is a Drug Awareness program for
students and parents that teaches students,
"Don't just say, 'NO!' Help your friends say
'NO!'"
Florida High students in middle and high school will
get the opportunity to hear Michael's Message on
November 14. Parents interested in learning about
current club or designer drugs are invited to attend
a parent education program that same evening. Mark
your calendars now for this event. The drug culture
constantly changes and our community is not immune
from its impact. For more information about this
program, please visit www.michaelsmessage.org

Rodeo Recap, Garden Update & SNAP!
Bike Rodeo
This October 25 event was a huge success due in part
to the great weather and the large number of
students who joined the FSU Police Department to
have tons of fun while learning bicycle safety
techniques. After a bicycle safety check and helmet
fittings, the kids got to ride through an obstacle
course learning different safety techniques along
the way, including dodging rocks, stopping and
looking before crossing intersections, and balance
on the much-loved slalom course.
School Gardens
The Florida High administration October 19 approved
the school garden project which calls for a 12x15'
elementary vegetable/herb garden, an 8x10'
elementary butterfly garden, and a 15x18' middle and
high school vegetable garden. The plots will be
located along the western edge of campus between the
elementary school playground and the gazebo. The
next step before beginning to dig is to make sure
there are no electric or water lines in the area
that would be damaged by the project. Once this is
determined, a workday will be set to begin removing
the sod and installing the garden soil. We now have
an immediate need for use of a sod cutting machine
for a few hours, so if anyone is able to donate one
please contact me
ASAP.
Healthy Snacks
The School Nutrition Advisory Program (SNAP)
continues its review and analysis of the snacks
available to our children on campus. Raw data has
been gathered concerning the nutritional composition
of the foods offered at the gym and stadium
concession stands, after school program, vending
machines, cafeteria a la carte program, and the fall
festival. This information is now being analyzed by
comparing the calorie, fat, saturated fat, sodium
and sugar in the snacks to the standards in the new
Florida High Wellness Policy that was adopted by the
Florida High Board of Directors in August. Once the
analysis is completed, the information will form a
baseline of data for use by the Wellness Committee
to assess where improvements are needed to the
nutritional content of the foods available on
campus. The analysis should be completed within the
next month.
Future programs include a health and safety fair and
a safe driving workshop.
Anyone wishing to volunteer for any of the above
projects who has not already done so should contact me.

Box Tops and Labels Update
|
|
Congratulations to Our Winners!
All the Box Tops, Campbell's labels for education
and Tyson labels that were turned in have been
counted. The following individuals are the winners
for the first collection period.
K - 2 ($10 Borders gift card)
Taylor Cherry
Carson Miller
3 - 5 ($10 Borders gift card)
Brittany Corbett
Dean Delp
6 - 8 ($10 movie card)
Danny Pomidor
Tres Brumbley
9 - 12 ($10 movie card)
PJ Newman
Ke'Sean Lewis
Congratulations to these students for collecting the
most labels in their category. Each participant
will receive a gift for their participation.
Thank you to all the parents that trimmed their box
tops, this helps out alot when there are thousands
to handle.
Reminder: There were several box tops turned in
that were expired or the expiration date was cut
off. The school does not get credit for these so
therefore, your child will not get credit for them.
Please make sure you do not cut off the expiration
date. Also, please make sure to put your child's
name on the bag you put your labels in. There were
several that were turned in with no name on them so
we do not know who gets the credit.
A huge thank you to Alicia Cherry for helping
collect, count and sort all the labels.
The next collection date is December 6.
Thank you for your support of this wonderful program.
