Fall Carnival
This Friday students can enjoy over 30 booths of food, fun, and games. The fun starts at 1:15PM and lasts until 2:55PM. Tickets will be sold each morning in the Tomahawk Cafe and during the carnival. NHS students will also come to each elementary classroom during the week to sell tickets.
No cash will be accepted at booths, tickets only. That's why it's a good
idea to prepurchase tickets.
Teachers are asked to please plan to help supervise during this event. Parents and other family members are welcome to participate.

Volunteers Needed This Week! It seems like once the weather cools down the number of events picks up! We could use help with the following upcoming events. If you are able to volunteer for one of them it would be greatly appreciated:
Second Harvest Food Drive 11/5-11/9 We need some parents to help collect the canned goods from the students
arriving at the drop-off circles. The time commitment is from 7:15
until 8:15 am.
Annual Thanksgiving Meal 11/8 We need 4 volunteers at each 2-hour shift to help sell and collect
tickets. The shift will run from 9:30 am-11:30 am & 11:30 am-1:30
pm.
Fall Carnival 11/9 We will have a booth selling sugarless "Sandy Candy". The carnival
start at 1:00, so we need a few volunteers to assist with
set up and selling during the carnival.
If you are able to
volunteer, please contact me at the e-mail listed below. Thanks again
for all our volunteers, who give their time to make our school a better
place!

Health & Safety News
Healthy Snacks on Campus
Turns out kids actually will eat healthy snacks if given the
opportunity. A pilot program to supply
healthy alternatives at concession stands took shape last month with the PTSA
buying bananas and veggie burgers and donating them to the football boosters to
sell at games in order to convince the doubters that nutritious food can be
profitable. Both sold well, and this
program will be enlarged to cover other sports, with an expanded menu. The school Wellness Policy requires a minimum
of 20% of snacks sold at concession stands to meet healthy nutrition standards.
The PTSA will continue to monitor
the snacks available at campus food outlets and report this information to the School
Board and the school Wellness Committee.
Any PTSA members interested in assisting with these efforts should
contact me.
School Gardens The crop is in the ground, finally.
About 15 elementary kids started planting their fall garden the last
week in October thanks to the PTSA. They
are raising sugar peas, onions, romaine and head lettuce, broccoli, cabbage,
radishes, carrots, collards, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower, so stay tuned
for the Florida High farmer's market in a couple months. A butterfly garden will be added soon.
Trevor Hylton from the FAMU Cooperative Extension Service is
providing expertise and Marcus Boston
and Zulima Webmis from the Leon
County Agricultural Extension office are helping and organizing the kids into a
4-H Club. Thanks also to Gramling's for
the seeds and plants, teacher Barbara
Davis for being the faculty sponsor, and to the following parents who are
supervising the kids and helping with the planting: Angel Spicer, Julie
Lengacher, Wendy Warrell, Irene Bivins, Hank Stephens, Jayne Cerio
and Glenda Cobb.
Bike Rodeo
The bike rodeo was a big success with double the number of kids (30)
compared to last year. They got free
bike safety checks and helmets, and had had fun learning about bike safety on
an obstacle course set up by the FSU Police Department. Thanks to The Great Bicycle Shop, Joe's
Bike Shop and Higher Ground Bicycle
Shop for donating prizes, and to Krank
It Up Community Bike Shop and the Dept.
of Children and Families Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Section for providing
the helmets. Thanks also to parents Ross Burnaman for the tools, Mary Annette for the snacks, and Sally Young for the prizes.

Make a World of DifferenceThe Chinese are coming. So are the Brazilians, Turkish,
French, Germans, Koreans, Japanese and hundreds of other high school exchange
students from nearly 15different
countries worldwide. Education, Travel and Culture, a nonprofit organization
providing international exchange opportunities for high school students, is
seeking families interested in hosting these outstanding young people who are
embarking on the adventure of a lifetime. ETC students are carefully selected
based on maturity, flexibility, achievements, civic responsibility, and
motivation to learn about American culture.
Arriving at the end of August all students have full medical insurance,
spending money, and a good command of English. Host families are asked to treat
their student as one of their own, providing food, a bed (not necessarily in a
private room), and a loving home environment. They can broaden their horizons
and make a world of difference by sharing in this unique cultural opportunity.
For more information on how to host or be an exchange
student, please call Catherine Stresing at 1-866-298-4792 or 850-363-7200 or by e-mail
at cstresing@edutrav.org. You can also visit us at www.edutrav.org

Save the Date for MLK '08. Help Build the Playground We need YOU to
make our elementary kids' dreams a reality. Volunteers of all skill
levels are needed January 18-21, 2008, to help construct the new
playground. Please visit www.fsusplaygroundproject.org for more information and to complete a Volunteer Application.
The FSUS Playground Steering Committee still needs a Materials Coordinator
to supervise the acquisition of the materials and supplies needed for
the build. This person should ideally have a construction background.
Please call Lisa Pessin at 656-1699 if you can fill this vital role in our planning process!
The
Classroom Challenge is heating up. Mrs. Boniella's 1st grade class is
now in first place followed by Mrs. Magnuson's 3rd grade class and Mrs.
Taylor's 1st grade class rounding out the top three. The winning class
will get the first recess on the new playground. Turn in your
volunteer application to the Front Office today! Mr. Trafford will
announce the standings at the November Fun Friday on November 30.
